The operating system and file management
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 1
Overview
File, in operating-system terms, file system and purpose of a directory structure.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What are three items of metadata an operating system typically records about a file?
Explain why the operating system, rather than each application, controls access to the disk.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a file, in operating-system terms?
Model answer
A file is a named collection of data held on secondary storage that the operating system treats as a single unit.
- 2
What is a file system?
Model answer
A file system is the part of the operating system that decides how files are named, organised, stored on the medium and found again.
- 3
What is the purpose of a directory structure?
Model answer
A directory structure groups related files under named folders arranged in a tree, so files can be organised by purpose and located by following a path rather than by searching the whole disk.
- 4
How does an absolute path differ from a relative path, giving an example of each?
Model answer
An absolute path names a file from the root of the file system, such as C:\projects\bank\Account.java, while a relative path names it from the current working directory, such as bank\Account.java.
- 5
What does a filename extension tell the operating system?
Model answer
A filename extension records the intended type of the content, which the operating system uses to choose an icon and to decide which program opens the file.
- 6
Why does renaming a text file so that it ends in .exe not make the file runnable?
Model answer
An extension is only a label; the operating system still inspects the file header for a valid executable format, and plain text contains no machine code and no entry point, so loading it fails.
Other ways to work this
The same content, four other ways.
What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Software and the Development Environment, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
