Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What does XML stand for, and what is XML used for?
Model answer
XML stands for Extensible Markup Language, and XML is used to hold and exchange structured data as text that both a person and a program can read.
- 2
Why is XML described as self-describing?
Model answer
Every value in an XML document sits inside a tag that names what the value is, so the meaning of the data travels with the data instead of depending on a separate layout document.
- 3
Name the elements in this XML fragment: <book><title>Kes</title><author>Barry Hines</author></book>
Model answer
The fragment contains three elements: book, which is the root of the fragment, and the two child elements title and author.
- 4
In the XML <student id="1042">Ali</student>, identify the element name, the attribute and the text content.
Model answer
The element name is student, the attribute is id with the value 1042, and the text content is Ali.
- 5
What are four rules an XML document must obey to be well-formed?
Model answer
A well-formed XML document has exactly one root element, closes every element it opens, nests elements without overlapping, and quotes every attribute value; tag names must also match in case.
- 6
Why is <name>Ali</Name> not well-formed XML?
Model answer
XML tag names are case sensitive, so the closing tag Name does not match the opening tag name and the element is never properly closed.
