Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

What does a Gantt chart show?

    Model answer

A Gantt chart lists the activities down the left-hand side against a calendar across the top, drawing each activity as a horizontal bar whose position gives its start and whose length gives its duration.

  2. 2

How are dependencies represented on a Gantt chart?

    Model answer

Dependencies are drawn as arrows running from the end of one bar to the start of another, showing that the second activity cannot begin until the first has finished.

  3. 3

What does it mean when two bars on a Gantt chart cover the same weeks?

    Model answer

Two bars covering the same weeks mean the activities are planned to run in parallel. Parallel working is only possible where the two activities do not depend on each other and the resources for both are available at once.

  4. 4

How is a summary bar used on a Gantt chart?

    Model answer

A summary bar spans all the detailed activities of one stage on a single line, so a manager can collapse the chart to the stage level for reporting and expand only the stage under discussion.

  5. 5

How is progress recorded on a Gantt chart while work is under way?

    Model answer

Progress is recorded by shading each bar in proportion to the part of the activity completed, so the shaded portion can be compared with where the current date falls.

  6. 6

What does the vertical line marking today's date tell a manager when compared with the shading?

    Model answer

An activity whose shading has not reached the vertical line for today is behind plan, and one shaded past it is ahead, which lets slippage be spotted at a glance across the whole project.
