Relationships and their degree
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 1
Overview
Relationship in an ER model, three degrees of relationship and one-to-one relationship.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is a one-to-many relationship?
Give an example of each of the three degrees drawn from a school.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a relationship in an ER model?
Model answer
A relationship is an association between two entities that the system must record, such as a customer placing orders. It is drawn as a line between the two entities and named with a verb that reads correctly in both directions.
- 2
What are the three degrees of relationship?
Model answer
The three degrees are one to one, one to many and many to many, describing how many occurrences of each entity may be associated with a single occurrence of the other.
- 3
What is a one-to-one relationship?
Model answer
A one-to-one relationship associates one occurrence of an entity with at most one occurrence of the other, and the reverse is also true. An employee allocated exactly one company car, where each car is allocated to exactly one employee, is one to one.
- 4
What is a one-to-many relationship?
Model answer
A one-to-many relationship associates one occurrence of the first entity with many occurrences of the second, while each of those is associated with only one of the first. One customer places many orders and each order is placed by one customer.
- 5
What is a many-to-many relationship?
Model answer
A many-to-many relationship associates each occurrence of either entity with many occurrences of the other. A student studies many courses and each course is studied by many students.
- 6
Give an example of each of the three degrees drawn from a school.
Model answer
One to one: a pupil and their examination candidate number. One to many: a form and the pupils registered in it. Many to many: a pupil and the subjects they study, since a pupil takes several subjects and a subject is taken by several pupils.
