First normal form
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 1
Overview
Atomic value and process of reaching first normal form.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Take an order document holding OrderNo, OrderDate, CustomerNo, CustomerName and repeating lines of ProductCode, Description, UnitPrice and Quantity to first normal form
Why does the order line table need a composite key?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
When is data in first normal form?
Model answer
Data is in first normal form when it contains no repeating groups: every intersection of a row and a column holds a single atomic value, and the table has a primary key.
- 2
What is an atomic value?
Model answer
An atomic value is a single indivisible item of data. A field holding three telephone numbers separated by commas is not atomic, because the individual numbers cannot be searched, sorted or updated separately.
- 3
What is the process of reaching first normal form?
Model answer
The repeating group is removed to a table of its own, the key of the original record is carried into it as part of its key, and the attributes that occur only once per record stay in the original table.
- 4
Take the order document to first normal form.
Model answer
1NF gives two tables. Order: OrderNo as key, with OrderDate, CustomerNo and CustomerName. OrderLine: OrderNo and ProductCode together as key, with Description, UnitPrice and Quantity.
- 5
Why does the order line table need a composite key?
Model answer
Neither attribute is unique on its own: one order number appears on every line of that order, and one product code appears on lines of many different orders. The two together identify a single line.
- 6
Is a table with a full name field in a single column in first normal form?
Model answer
Strictly it is not atomic if the business needs to search or sort on surname alone, because the field then holds two meaningful values. If the name is only ever printed whole, holding it in one column is acceptable.
