Object files and serialisation
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 1
Overview
Object file and version problem in serialisation.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is serialisation?
What is an object file?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is serialisation?
Model answer
Serialisation is converting an object in memory into a stream of bytes recording its class and the values of its attributes, so the object can be stored or transmitted.
- 2
What is deserialisation?
Model answer
Deserialisation is reading such a stream of bytes back and rebuilding an object of the same class holding the same attribute values as the original.
- 3
What is an object file?
Model answer
An object file holds one or more serialised objects, so a whole structure can be saved and reloaded without the program taking it apart field by field.
- 4
Why is serialisation convenient compared with writing each field to a text file?
Model answer
Serialisation saves and restores the entire object in a single operation, so no code has to break the object into fields and reassemble it, and no field can be forgotten.
- 5
What must a Java class do before its objects can be serialised?
Model answer
The class must implement the Serializable marker interface, which tells the run-time system that saving objects of that class is permitted.
- 6
What happens when a serialised object holds a reference to another object?
Model answer
The referenced object is serialised as well, so the whole connected structure is written and restoring the first object restores the objects it pointed at.
Other ways to work this
The same content, four other ways.
What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Exception Handling and Managing Input and Output, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
