Recording progress against the plan
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 2
Overview
Progress log and what variance means in a project plan.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why is the actual duration of every task recorded?
Explain what variance means in a project plan.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define a progress log.
Model answer
A progress log is a dated record of what was done on each task, how long it took and what still remains.
- 2
Why is the actual duration of every task recorded?
Model answer
Recorded actual durations show where the estimates were wrong, and provide the evidence for the evaluation at the end.
- 3
Explain what variance means in a project plan.
Model answer
Variance is the difference between the planned figure for a task and the figure actually achieved.
- 4
A task was estimated at 5 days and took 8 days. State the variance.
Model answer
The variance is three days over the estimate, because 8 days minus 5 days is three days.
- 5
Why is percentage complete an unreliable measure on its own?
Model answer
Percentage complete is a judgement made by the developer, and the last part of a task usually takes far longer than the figure suggests.
- 6
How often should progress be recorded on a development running over several months?
Model answer
Progress is recorded at least weekly, so a delay becomes visible while there is still time to react to it.
