Test plans and choosing test data
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 2
Overview
Boundary test data, invalid or erroneous test data and extreme data.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why does a test plan record the expected result before the test is run?
Which three categories of test data should be tried on every control of a form?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Name five columns a test plan table should have.
Model answer
A test plan should have a test number, a description of what is being tested, the data used, the expected result and the actual result.
- 2
Why does a test plan record the expected result before the test is run?
Model answer
Writing the expectation first stops the tester accepting whatever the program happens to produce as though it were correct.
- 3
Which three categories of test data should be tried on every control of a form?
Model answer
Every control on a form is tried with normal data, with data on the boundary of what is allowed, and with invalid data that must be refused.
- 4
Give an example of normal test data for a text box collecting a customer's surname.
Model answer
A surname such as Kelly is normal test data for that box, because a name of ordinary length and spelling is exactly what the field expects to receive.
- 5
What is boundary test data?
Model answer
Boundary test data sits exactly on the edge of what is allowed, because faults in a comparison show up at the limits rather than in the middle.
- 6
A quantity box accepts a whole number from 1 to 20. List suitable boundary values.
Model answer
The values to try are 0, 1, 20 and 21, taking one on each side of both limits.
