Recording and interpreting test results
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 1
Overview
Recorded as the actual result of a test, pass actually and first thing to check when a test fails.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What does a group of failures with something in common suggest?
A mark validator passes for 50 and for 0 but fails for 100. What does that pattern suggest?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is recorded as the actual result of a test?
Model answer
The actual result records exactly what the program produced, including any value returned, any message displayed and the state the object was left in.
- 2
What does a pass actually mean?
Model answer
A pass means the actual result matched the expected result for that particular data, and it says nothing whatever about data that was not tried.
- 3
What is the first thing to check when a test fails?
Model answer
The tester first checks whether the expected result was itself correct, because a test can fail through a mistake in the plan rather than a fault in the code.
- 4
Why is evidence of each result kept?
Model answer
A record of what the program produced allows the result to be reviewed later without running the test again, and shows that the test really was carried out.
- 5
What does a group of failures with something in common suggest?
Model answer
Several failures sharing a value, an edge of a range or a method usually point at one underlying fault rather than several, so the cause is sought where the tests overlap.
- 6
What does it mean to interpret a test result?
Model answer
To interpret a test result is to say what the difference between the expected and the actual value implies about the code, naming the likely cause rather than merely recording that the test failed.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Testing an Object Oriented Application, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
