User acceptance, alpha and beta testing
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 1
Overview
User acceptance testing, acceptance criteria and contractual significance of acceptance.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
State two risks of running a beta programme.
What should happen to faults found during acceptance that the customer agrees not to fix before go-live?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is user acceptance testing?
Model answer
User acceptance testing is the final testing carried out by the customer's own staff, using the agreed requirements to decide whether the delivered system is fit to be put into use.
- 2
Who designs the acceptance tests, and against what?
Model answer
Acceptance tests are designed by or with the users, working from the requirements agreed at the start rather than from anything the developers produced later.
- 3
What are acceptance criteria?
Model answer
Acceptance criteria are the conditions written down in advance that the system must satisfy to be accepted, such as every high-priority test passing and no outstanding fault of a stated severity.
- 4
Why is acceptance testing carried out with the customer's own data?
Model answer
The customer's own data carries the volumes, the formats and the historical oddities of the real business, so the system is exercised on the cases it will actually meet rather than on data invented by the supplier.
- 5
What is the contractual significance of acceptance?
Model answer
Acceptance normally marks the point at which the customer takes the system on, the final payment falls due and responsibility for further faults passes to a maintenance or warranty agreement.
- 6
Why should acceptance testing not be the first time users see the system?
Model answer
Acceptance testing at the very end leaves no time to act on anything found, so a system first shown to users at that point either passes with reservations or misses its date; users should have seen and commented on it throughout.
