Defining Requirements and Documenting the Design

Documenting the processes and the logic of the solution

  • 3 things to know
  • A2 Unit 2

Overview

Describing what each process does and produces, writing algorithms for anything involving calculation, decision or repetition, and checking them by hand before any code is written.

What you need to know

Answer each one before you reveal it.

Process

How is a process documented in the design?

Process

Why is pseudocode used to record the logic of a process?

Key term

Give the pseudocode logic for adding a delivery to the quantity held for a product.

Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

Define a process in a solution design.

    Model answer

A process is a piece of work the solution performs on data, such as calculating a total or reducing stock after a sale.

  2. 2

How is a process documented in the design?

    Model answer

A process is documented with its inputs, the steps it carries out, the data it changes and the outputs it produces.

  3. 3

Why is pseudocode used to record the logic of a process?

    Model answer

Pseudocode sets out the steps in a language-independent form that user and developer can both follow, before any code exists.

  4. 4

Give the pseudocode logic for adding a delivery to the quantity held for a product.

    Model answer

The logic finds the product record by its code. The delivery quantity is added to the quantity in stock, and the new value is stored and displayed.

  5. 5

State what a structure chart is used for.

    Model answer

A structure chart shows a process broken into modules and sub-modules, with the calls between them arranged as a hierarchy.

  6. 6

Why is a complex process broken into modules in the design?

    Model answer

Smaller modules can be written, tested and corrected one at a time, and a module needed twice is written only once.

AA null means no value has been recorded.
BZero and an empty string are values.
CA null is the absence of a value.

Test It catches misconceptions

Spot the fault in a statement. The traps are the mistakes students actually make.
