- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 1
Overview
Parameter and an argument, return type of void and instance method.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is a method?
What makes up a method's signature in Java?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a method?
Model answer
A method is a named block of code inside a class that performs one job when called, and a method may take parameters and send back a result.
- 2
What makes up a method's signature in Java?
Model answer
A Java method signature is the method's name together with the number, types and order of its parameters; the return type is not part of it.
- 3
Distinguish between a parameter and an argument.
Model answer
A parameter is the variable named in the method's declaration, and an argument is the actual value supplied at the point where the method is called.
- 4
What does a return type of void mean?
Model answer
A return type of void means the method sends no value back to the caller, so the method is written for its effect rather than for a result.
- 5
A class holds public int twice(int n) { return n * 2; }. What does System.out.println(twice(7) + 1); print?
Model answer
The call twice(7) returns 14, then 1 is added to give 15, so the statement prints 15.
- 6
What is an instance method?
Model answer
An instance method is called on one particular object and can read and change the attributes belonging to that object.
