Normal, boundary and erroneous test data
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 1
Overview
Three categories of test data, normal test data and boundary test data.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is erroneous test data, and what is being tested by it?
A membership age field accepts 18 to 65 inclusive. Give suitable normal, boundary and erroneous values.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Name the three categories of test data.
Model answer
The three categories of test data are normal data, boundary data and erroneous data.
- 2
What is normal test data, and what does it establish?
Model answer
Normal test data is ordinary valid input from the middle of the accepted range, and it establishes that the routine produces the right result in everyday use.
- 3
What is boundary test data?
Model answer
Boundary test data consists of the values at the very edge of what is acceptable, together with the values immediately outside, so that the exact point at which the program changes its decision can be checked.
- 4
What is erroneous test data, and what is being tested by it?
Model answer
Erroneous test data is input the system should refuse, such as letters in a numeric field or a blank where an entry is required, and what is being tested is that the program rejects it with a helpful message instead of crashing or storing it.
- 5
A membership age field accepts 18 to 65 inclusive. Give suitable normal, boundary and erroneous values.
Model answer
A normal value is 40, the boundary values are 17, 18, 65 and 66, and erroneous values include −3, the word twenty and an empty entry.
- 6
Why must the expected result be recorded for erroneous data as well as valid data?
Model answer
The expected result for erroneous data is the specific rejection and the message the user should see, and without recording it a tester cannot tell a correct refusal from a crash that happened to prevent the entry.

Every question in Testing Strategies, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
