Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

How is the name Scrum usually written, and where does it come from?

    Model answer

Scrum is written as an ordinary word rather than an abbreviation, and the name is taken from rugby, where the whole team moves the ball forward together, which is the image of a small team working as one on a sprint.

  2. 2

What is a sprint, and how long does one usually last?

    Model answer

A sprint is a fixed-length development cycle, usually between two and four weeks, at the end of which the team has a tested increment of the product that could in principle be released.

  3. 3

Name the three roles defined in Scrum.

    Model answer

Scrum defines the product owner, the scrum master and the development team.

  4. 4

State three responsibilities of the product owner.

    Model answer

The product owner decides what the product should contain, keeps the backlog ordered by business value, and accepts or rejects the work delivered at the end of a sprint.

  5. 5

What does a scrum master do, and what do they deliberately not do?

    Model answer

A scrum master coaches the team in the process, removes the obstacles the team reports and protects the sprint from interruption, and deliberately does not assign tasks or direct how the work is done.

  6. 6

What is meant by saying a Scrum team is self-organising and cross-functional?

    Model answer

A Scrum team is self-organising because the members decide among themselves who takes which task, and cross-functional because the team contains every skill needed to turn a backlog item into finished work without handing it to another department.
