Testing at the design stage
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 1
Overview
Static testing, structured walkthrough and formal inspection.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is requirements traceability, and what does it protect against?
What does it mean to test a design?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What does it mean to test a design?
Model answer
Testing a design means checking the design documents against the requirements before any code is written, by walking realistic transactions through the proposed screens, processes and data structures to see whether the required outcomes can actually be produced.
- 2
Why is the design stage particularly important for testing?
Model answer
The design stage is particularly important because a fault caught in a design document costs a redrawn diagram, while the same fault caught after coding costs the rewriting of every module built from that diagram.
- 3
What is static testing?
Model answer
Static testing examines a document or the code itself without executing anything, using reviews, inspections and desk checking to find faults by reading.
- 4
How does dynamic testing differ from static testing?
Model answer
Dynamic testing runs the software with chosen inputs and compares the results with what was expected, so dynamic testing needs working code while static testing can start on the first document produced.
- 5
Describe a structured walkthrough.
Model answer
In a structured walkthrough the author leads a small group of colleagues through a design or a piece of code step by step, and the group questions each decision, with someone recording the faults found rather than debating how to fix them.
- 6
Why does a walkthrough record faults but not agree the fixes?
Model answer
Fixes are left to the author afterwards because a group solving each problem as it appears takes several times as long and rarely reaches the end of the document, so the faults in the last section are never found at all.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Testing Strategies, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
