Abstract, base and inherited classes
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 1
Overview
Base class, inherited class and abstract class.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is a base class?
What does an inherited class receive from its base class?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a base class?
Model answer
A base class is a class that holds the attributes and methods common to a family of related classes, and from which those classes are derived.
- 2
What is an inherited class?
Model answer
An inherited class is a class derived from a base class, receiving the base class members and adding or refining behaviour of its own.
- 3
What does an inherited class receive from its base class?
Model answer
An inherited class receives the accessible attributes and methods of the base class, so those members do not have to be written again.
- 4
Which Java keyword states that one class inherits from another? Give an example declaration.
Model answer
Java uses the keyword extends, as in class SavingsAccount extends Account, which makes SavingsAccount an inherited class of the base class Account.
- 5
What is an abstract class?
Model answer
An abstract class is a class marked as incomplete, intended only to be inherited from and not to have objects created directly from it.
- 6
Why can an abstract class not be instantiated?
Model answer
An abstract class may declare methods with no body and describes a category too general to exist on its own, so the language forbids creating an object that would have missing behaviour.
