Analysis and design principles for business solutions
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 1
Overview
Purpose of the analysis stage of a project, four fact-finding techniques an analyst uses and what levelling a data flow diagram means.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is the purpose of the analysis stage of a project?
Name four fact-finding techniques an analyst uses.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is the purpose of the analysis stage of a project?
Model answer
The purpose of analysis is to establish what the business actually needs, by studying the existing arrangements and the problems in them, and to express those needs as requirements before any solution is designed.
- 2
Name four fact-finding techniques an analyst uses.
Model answer
Interviews, questionnaires, observation of people at work, and inspection of existing documents and records are four fact-finding techniques.
- 3
When is a questionnaire a better choice than an interview, and what is the price paid?
Model answer
A questionnaire is better when the same facts are needed from many people spread over several sites, and the price paid is a low response rate and no opportunity to follow up an interesting answer.
- 4
What can observation reveal that an interview cannot, and what distorts it?
Model answer
Observation reveals what people really do rather than what they believe they do, including shortcuts and exceptions nobody mentions, and it is distorted because staff who know they are being watched tend to work to the official procedure.
- 5
Why does an analyst collect existing paperwork such as order forms and invoices?
Model answer
Existing paperwork shows the real data items, their formats and their volumes, and the awkward cases pencilled in the margins often expose requirements that no interview brings out.
- 6
Distinguish a functional requirement from a non-functional requirement, with one example of each.
Model answer
A functional requirement states something the system must do, such as calculating a customer's discount, while a non-functional requirement states a quality it must have, such as returning a search result within two seconds.
Other ways to work this
The same content, four other ways.
What is inside Levo
