What a test plan contains
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 1
Overview
Purpose of a test plan on a development project, six things a test plan records and entry criteria for a stage of testing.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What are exit criteria, and give an example?
Why does a test plan schedule time for retesting?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is the purpose of a test plan on a development project?
Model answer
The purpose of a test plan is to state in advance what will be tested at each level, how, by whom and when, and the standard the software must reach before it is accepted, so that testing is a budgeted activity rather than whatever time happens to be left.
- 2
Name six things a test plan records.
Model answer
A test plan records the scope of the testing, the features to be tested and those excluded, the approach for each level, the environment and data needed, the schedule and responsibilities, and the criteria for passing.
- 3
Why does a test plan state what will not be tested?
Model answer
Stating what is excluded makes the limits of the testing explicit, so that a decision to leave an unchanged legacy report untested is a recorded decision rather than an oversight discovered afterwards.
- 4
What are entry criteria for a stage of testing?
Model answer
Entry criteria are the conditions that must hold before that testing may begin, such as the code being complete and unit tested and the test environment being installed with its data.
- 5
What are exit criteria, and give an example?
Model answer
Exit criteria state when the testing is finished, for example that every planned test has been run, all faults of high severity are corrected and retested, and no more than an agreed number of minor faults remain open.
- 6
Name the columns of a test case table.
Model answer
A test case table carries a test number, the purpose of the test, the input data, the expected result, the actual result, whether it passed or failed, and the action taken.
