Testing the paths a user takes through an interface
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 2
Overview
Path through an interface, happy path test and tested by clicking a button twice in quick succession.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is a path through an interface?
Why can an interface not be tested by trying every possible path?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a path through an interface?
Model answer
A path is one sequence of screens and actions a user follows from opening the application to completing a task.
- 2
Why can an interface not be tested by trying every possible path?
Model answer
Controls can be used in almost any order, so the number of combinations grows far beyond what can be tried in the time available.
- 3
How is the set of paths to be tested chosen?
Model answer
The most common journeys are tested first, then the routes that touch risky code, then the routes where a user is most likely to make a mistake.
- 4
What is a happy path test?
Model answer
A happy path test follows the journey a user takes when everything is entered correctly and nothing goes wrong.
- 5
Why must the unhappy paths be tested as well?
Model answer
Users make mistakes and files go missing, so the routes through cancelling, correcting and failing are the ones that expose weak error handling.
- 6
What should be tested about the Cancel button on every form?
Model answer
Cancel should be tested to confirm the form closes, that nothing is written, and that the values held before the form opened are unchanged.
