Resources needed to develop a project
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 1
Overview
Five categories of resource that a development project consumes, skills matrix and four software resources a project must license or obtain.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Distinguish a one-off capital cost from a continuing revenue cost, with an example of each.
What is a resource histogram, and what does a peak above the available line mean?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Name five categories of resource that a development project consumes.
Model answer
A development project consumes people, time, hardware, software and money, together with accommodation and the working space the team occupies.
- 2
Why are people usually the largest cost on a software project?
Model answer
People are the largest cost because software is produced almost entirely by skilled labour, so salaries and contractor fees dominate a budget in which hardware and licences are comparatively small one-off purchases.
- 3
What is a skills matrix, and how is one used in planning?
Model answer
A skills matrix lists each team member against each skill the project needs, and it is used to spot the skills held by only one person and to plan the training or recruitment needed before that work starts.
- 4
Explain why adding developers to a project that is already late can make it later.
Model answer
Adding developers late makes a project later because existing staff must stop work to explain the system to the newcomers, and every extra person adds communication links, so output falls before it rises.
- 5
A team of five people has how many two-way communication links, and a team of ten? Show the working.
Model answer
A team of five has 5 × 4 ÷ 2 = 10 links and a team of ten has 10 × 9 ÷ 2 = 45 links, so doubling the team size makes the communication load more than four times greater.
- 6
Why is the users' time treated as a scheduled resource rather than assumed to be free?
Model answer
Users have their own jobs to do, so the days they spend in interviews, workshops and acceptance testing must be booked with their managers in advance or the project stalls waiting for people who were never released.
