Finding the critical path
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 1
Overview
Critical path and crashing an activity.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is meant by crashing an activity?
What is fast-tracking, and what does it cost?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define the critical path.
Model answer
The critical path is the longest chain of dependent activities through a project, and its length sets the shortest time in which the project can be completed.
- 2
How is the critical path identified once the passes are complete?
Model answer
The critical path is identified by joining the activities that have zero float, meaning their earliest and latest dates are identical, and that chain runs unbroken from the start of the network to the end.
- 3
Two chains join the same two points, one of 20 days and one of 14 days. Which is critical, and by how much can the other slip?
Model answer
The 20-day chain is critical, and the 14-day chain can slip by 20 − 14 = 6 days in total before it becomes critical too.
- 4
A project runs A 5 days, then B 4 days and C 3 days in parallel, D 6 days after B, E 5 days after C, F 3 days after both D and E, then G 4 days. State the critical path and its length.
Model answer
The critical path is A, B, D, F, G, and its length is 5 + 4 + 6 + 3 + 4 = 22 days.
- 5
Why does the project manager watch critical activities more closely than the others?
Model answer
Critical activities are watched most closely because any delay to one of them delays the whole project immediately, whereas a delay elsewhere is absorbed by spare time before it does any harm.
- 6
An activity on the critical path finishes 2 days late. What happens to the project end date?
Model answer
A critical activity finishing 2 days late pushes the project end date 2 days later, unless time is recovered from a later activity on the same chain.
