When is a file-based database the right choice?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
On what grounds is a database management system chosen for a desktop solution?
Model answer
It is chosen on whether it supports the relational features the design needs, whether it runs on the hardware available, whether it is affordable or already licensed, whether one user or several will use it at once, and whether the developer and the future maintainer can work with it.
- 2
What is the difference between a file-based and a server-based database?
Model answer
A file-based database is a single file opened directly by the application, which suits one user on one machine. A server-based database runs as a service that applications connect to, which is what allows several users, proper locking and central backup.
- 3
When is a file-based database the right choice?
Model answer
When one person uses the solution on one machine, the data volume is modest, and simplicity of installation matters more than concurrent access, since there is then no server to install or administer.
- 4
When must a server-based database be used?
Model answer
Whenever several people will use the solution at the same time, because the server is what serialises their updates, enforces locking and keeps one authoritative copy of the data.
- 5
Why must the development tool and the database be able to work together?
Model answer
The application reaches the database through a driver or provider for that product, so a database with no provider for the chosen language cannot be connected to at all, whatever its other merits.
- 6
What is a database driver or provider?
Model answer
A driver or provider is the software component that translates between the application's data-access code and the particular database product, so the same code can address a different database by changing the provider and the connection details.
