What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.

What does the scope of a project mean?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What does the scope of a project mean?
Model answer
The scope of a project is the full statement of what will be produced and what work is included, together with an explicit list of what has been excluded.
- 2
Why is the excluded work written down as well as the included work?
Model answer
Excluded work is written down because a customer otherwise assumes anything unmentioned is included, and the written exclusion is what turns a later request into a change to be costed rather than an argument.
- 3
What is a work breakdown structure?
Model answer
A work breakdown structure divides the whole job into stages, then into smaller and smaller packages, until each package is small enough for one person to be responsible for it and for its effort to be estimated with confidence.
- 4
How small should a work package be?
Model answer
A work package should be small enough that its progress can be judged within a week or two, because a package lasting months reports as half done for a long time and hides slippage.
- 5
What is a work package, and what must be recorded against each one?
Model answer
A work package is the smallest unit of work in the breakdown, and each one records its description, its estimated effort, the person responsible, what it depends on and how completion will be recognised.
- 6
Distinguish a product breakdown structure from a work breakdown structure.
Model answer
A product breakdown structure lists the things the project must produce, while a work breakdown structure lists the activities needed to produce them.
