Float and how it is used
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 1
Overview
Two equivalent ways of calculating total float, free float and float on an activity that lies on the critical path.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
An activity can start no earlier than day 5 and no later than day 7. State its total float.
Define free float.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is float?
Model answer
Float is the amount of time an activity can be delayed without causing a delay somewhere that matters, and it exists because a chain of activities is shorter than the critical chain running beside it.
- 2
State two equivalent ways of calculating total float.
Model answer
Total float is the latest start minus the earliest start, and it is equally the latest finish minus the earliest finish, because both subtractions measure the same slack in the activity's window.
- 3
An activity can start no earlier than day 5 and no later than day 7. State its total float.
Model answer
The total float is 7 − 5 = 2 days, so the activity may begin up to 2 days late without pushing the project's end date.
- 4
An activity has an earliest finish of day 8 and a latest finish of day 10. State its total float and explain what a delay of 3 days would do.
Model answer
The total float is 10 − 8 = 2 days, so a delay of 3 days exceeds the float by 1 day and the project finishes 1 day late.
- 5
Define free float.
Model answer
Free float is the time an activity can be delayed without delaying the earliest start of any activity that immediately follows it.
- 6
Activity C finishes at the earliest on day 8, and the activity that follows it can start at the earliest on day 8. State the free float of C.
Model answer
The free float of C is 8 − 8 = 0 days, so any delay to C immediately pushes back the earliest start of the activity after it.
