Binary, object and executable files
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 1
Overview
Binary file, object code and executable file.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is a library file, and how does a library differ from an executable?
What is a binary file?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a binary file?
Model answer
A binary file holds data as raw byte values intended for a program to interpret, rather than as characters intended to be read as text.
- 2
Why does a binary file appear as nonsense in a text editor?
Model answer
A text editor tries to display every byte as a character, but the bytes of a binary file encode numbers, addresses and instructions, so most of them map to characters that mean nothing.
- 3
What is object code?
Model answer
Object code is the machine-code output produced by compiling one source file, complete in itself but still holding unresolved references to routines defined elsewhere.
- 4
What is an executable file?
Model answer
An executable file is a complete, linked program in machine code, in a format the operating system can load into memory and run.
- 5
How does object code differ from an executable file?
Model answer
Object code is an intermediate result with external references still outstanding and no entry point, whereas an executable has every reference resolved and can be started directly.
- 6
Explain why an executable compiled for one processor family will not run on another.
Model answer
An executable contains instructions encoded in one processor's instruction set, and a processor of a different family decodes those bytes as different instructions or as invalid ones.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Software and the Development Environment, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
