The relational model
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 1
Overview
Relational model, atomicity of a field value and relational database management system.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
How are two tables linked in the relational model?
Why does the order of rows in a relational table not matter?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is the relational model?
Model answer
The relational model organises data into tables of rows and columns, where each table describes one kind of thing and tables are associated by matching values rather than by stored pointers. The model was set out by E F Codd in 1970.
- 2
How are two tables linked in the relational model?
Model answer
The primary key of one table is placed into the other as a foreign key, and a query joins the two by matching those values. Nothing physical connects the tables; the link exists in the data.
- 3
What does it mean to say the relational model is set-based?
Model answer
A relational query describes the set of rows wanted rather than the steps to fetch them, so the database management system decides how to obtain them. That is why the same query can be answered by different methods as the data grows.
- 4
Why does the order of rows in a relational table not matter?
Model answer
A row is identified by its primary key rather than by its position, so a table is a set rather than a list. Any required order is imposed by the query that reads the table, not by how the rows are stored.
- 5
What is meant by atomicity of a field value?
Model answer
An atomic value is a single indivisible item. A field holding a list of three telephone numbers is not atomic, which is what first normal form forbids, because the individual numbers cannot then be searched or updated separately.
- 6
State three strengths of the relational model.
Model answer
The relational model removes duplication so a fact is held once, allows queries the designer never anticipated because any tables can be joined on matching values, and separates the structure from the programs so either can change independently.
