- 1
What is an entity-relationship model?
Model answer
An entity-relationship model is a diagram of the things a system must hold data about, the properties recorded for each, and the associations between them. It records the logical structure of a database before any table is created.
- 2
What is an entity?
Model answer
An entity is a thing about which a system needs to hold data, such as a customer, a product or a booking. Each entity becomes a table when the model is implemented.
- 3
What is an entity occurrence?
Model answer
An entity occurrence is one particular instance of an entity. The entity is Customer, and the customer with a given customer number is one occurrence of it, corresponding to one row of the table.
- 4
What is an attribute?
Model answer
An attribute is a single property recorded about an entity, such as a customer's surname or a booking's date. Each attribute becomes a column.
- 5
How are entities identified from a description of a business problem?
Model answer
Entities are usually the nouns that recur in the description and on the documents the business already uses, and they are the things about which the business keeps records rather than the things it does.
- 6
How is an entity shown on an ER diagram?
Model answer
An entity is drawn as a rectangle labelled with the entity's name in the singular, and its attributes are either listed inside the rectangle or drawn as ovals attached to it, depending on the notation used.
