- 3 things to know

Overview
Switchboard or main menu form, difference between a modal and a modeless form and wrong with an application in which every form is modal.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
How should navigation be designed for a database application?
What is a switchboard or main menu form?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
How should navigation be designed for a database application?
Model answer
Navigation is designed from the tasks the user performs, so the routes to the things they do most often are shortest, every function is reachable, and it is always obvious how to get back.
- 2
What is a switchboard or main menu form?
Model answer
A switchboard is a form offering the main tasks of the application as buttons, giving one obvious starting point from which every part of the system can be reached.
- 3
How deep should a menu structure be?
Model answer
Shallow enough that a common task takes one or two steps. Burying frequent work three levels down is how users start working around the system rather than through it.
- 4
What is the difference between a modal and a modeless form?
Model answer
A modal form must be dealt with before the user can return to the form that opened it. A modeless form leaves both usable at once.
- 5
When should a form be modal?
Model answer
When the user must complete or cancel a decision before anything else makes sense — confirming a deletion, entering the details a calling form is waiting for — because leaving that open invites an inconsistent state.
- 6
What is wrong with an application in which every form is modal?
Model answer
The user cannot look anything up while entering data, so they are forced to cancel and start again, which is the commonest reason a data entry system is disliked.
