Text files
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 1
Overview
Text file and comma separated values file.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is a delimiter in a text file?
Give two disadvantages of storing data in a text file.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a text file?
Model answer
A text file stores data as a sequence of characters encoded to a standard such as ASCII or Unicode, with an end-of-line character marking where each line stops.
- 2
Why can a text file be opened in any editor?
Model answer
Every byte of a text file maps to a character in a standard encoding, so any program that knows the encoding can display the contents as readable text.
- 3
What is a delimiter in a text file?
Model answer
A delimiter is a chosen character, often a comma or a tab, written between the fields of a record so a reading program can tell where one field ends and the next begins.
- 4
What is a comma separated values file?
Model answer
A comma separated values file is a text file holding one record on each line, with the fields of that record separated by commas.
- 5
Give two advantages of storing data in a text file.
Model answer
A text file can be read and corrected in any editor, and it moves easily between different programs and operating systems because no program-specific format is involved.
- 6
Give two disadvantages of storing data in a text file.
Model answer
A text file takes more space than the same data held as raw values because every digit is stored as a character, and every value read back has to be converted before it can be used.
