Prototyping in the development process
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 1
Overview
Prototype in systems development, horizontal prototype and vertical prototype.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
How can prototyping be used inside an otherwise sequential project?
Distinguish a throwaway prototype from an evolutionary prototype.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a prototype in systems development?
Model answer
A prototype is an early working model of part of a system, built to be shown to users so that requirements and design decisions can be tested against something concrete rather than described in words.
- 2
Distinguish a throwaway prototype from an evolutionary prototype.
Model answer
A throwaway prototype is built to answer a question and then discarded before the real system is written, while an evolutionary prototype is refined repeatedly until it becomes the delivered system.
- 3
What is a horizontal prototype?
Model answer
A horizontal prototype covers the breadth of the user interface, showing many screens and how a user moves between them, but with little or no processing behind them.
- 4
What is a vertical prototype, and when is one built?
Model answer
A vertical prototype implements one function completely from the screen through to the stored data, and one is built to prove that a difficult or uncertain piece of the system can actually be made to work.
- 5
Why is a paper prototype or wireframe worth producing when working software could be built instead?
Model answer
A paper prototype costs minutes to produce and can be thrown away without regret, so users criticise it freely and the team can try five layouts in the time one coded screen would take.
- 6
Explain how prototyping reduces the risk of building the wrong system.
Model answer
Prototyping reduces the risk because users respond far more accurately to something they can operate than to a written description, so misunderstandings appear while they are still cheap to correct.
Other ways to work this
The same content, four other ways.
What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Reasons for Systems Development and Systems Methodologies, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
