The event object and reading it inside a handler
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 2
Overview
Event object, consuming an event and event propagation or bubbling.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Name three pieces of information an event object can carry.
How does a handler find out which control raised the event?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is an event object?
Model answer
An event object is a parameter passed into a handler carrying the details of what happened, such as the source control and the time.
- 2
Name three pieces of information an event object can carry.
Model answer
An event object can carry the source control, the coordinates of the pointer and which key or mouse button was involved.
- 3
How does a handler find out which control raised the event?
Model answer
The handler calls the event object's source accessor, which returns a reference to the control the event happened on.
- 4
A mouse handler contains lblOut.setText(e.getX() + "," + e.getY()); and the user clicks 15 pixels right and 60 pixels down from the panel's top left corner. What does the label read?
Model answer
The label reads 15,60 because getX and getY report the click position measured from the top left corner of the control that received the event.
- 5
What does consuming an event mean?
Model answer
Consuming an event marks it as already dealt with, so the event is not passed on to the control's default behaviour or to any further handler.
- 6
A key handler contains if (!Character.isDigit(e.getKeyChar())) { e.consume(); } and the user presses the letter a in the text box. What appears in the box?
Model answer
Nothing appears, because the character is not a digit, the call to consume discards the event and the letter never reaches the text box.
