Testing and documenting the built solution
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 2
Overview
Testing the connection, referential integrity, concurrency and transactions, recording each test with its evidence, and what the technical and user documentation must contain.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What must the technical documentation record about the data access?
What must the user documentation cover for a database solution?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What has to be tested about the database connection specifically?
Model answer
That the solution connects from the machine it will run on, behaves sensibly when the database is unavailable, closes its connections, and works with the credentials the client will actually use rather than the developer's.
- 2
What test data is needed for a database solution?
Model answer
Normal values that should be accepted, boundary values at the exact limits of each field, and erroneous values that must be refused, together with enough volume to show whether the queries stay fast.
- 3
How is referential integrity tested?
Model answer
By attempting the actions it exists to prevent: entering a foreign key value that matches nothing, and deleting a parent that still has children, and confirming the database refuses or cascades exactly as the design said it would.
- 4
How is a concurrency clash tested?
Model answer
Two copies of the application are used to read the same row, one saves a change, and then the other saves. The second must detect the clash and report it rather than overwrite the first silently.
- 5
How is a transaction tested?
Model answer
A failure is forced part way through a multi-table save, and the database is then examined to confirm that none of the changes took effect rather than some of them.
- 6
What is regression testing, and why does a database solution need it?
Model answer
Regression testing re-runs tests that already passed, to show a change has broken nothing. A database solution needs it because a change to one table's structure or constraints can break a form or report elsewhere.
