Event handlers and registering a listener
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 2
Overview
Event handler, source of an event and anonymous inner class used for when handling events in Java.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
The Java line btnSave.addActionListener(handler); appears twice in the same setup code. How many times does the handler run for one click?
What is meant by the source of an event?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is an event handler?
Model answer
An event handler is a block of code written to run when a particular event happens on a particular object.
- 2
What does it mean to register a listener on a control?
Model answer
Registering a listener adds an object to the control's list of interested parties, so the control calls that object's method whenever the event occurs.
- 3
Is an event handler registered on the event, the control or the form?
Model answer
An event handler is registered on the individual control that raises the event, not on the form and not on the event type itself.
- 4
The Java line btnSave.addActionListener(handler); appears twice in the same setup code. How many times does the handler run for one click?
Model answer
The handler runs twice, because the button keeps a list of listeners and the second call adds a second entry, and one click notifies every entry in turn.
- 5
What is meant by the source of an event?
Model answer
The source of an event is the control the event happened to, and the source is carried inside the event object so a handler can identify it.
- 6
Give the advantage of one handler serving several buttons.
Model answer
One handler serving several buttons keeps related code together, and the handler decides what to do by testing which control was the source.
