Overview
Integrated development environment, four facilities a typical IDE provides and syntax highlighting.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What are four facilities a typical IDE provides?
What is syntax highlighting, and how does it help a programmer?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is an integrated development environment?
Model answer
An integrated development environment, or IDE, is a single application that gathers the tools needed to write, build, run and debug a program behind one interface.
- 2
What are four facilities a typical IDE provides?
Model answer
A typical IDE provides a source editor with syntax highlighting, a build command that invokes the compiler and linker, a debugger, and a project manager that tracks the files and settings.
- 3
What is syntax highlighting, and how does it help a programmer?
Model answer
Syntax highlighting colours keywords, literals, comments and strings differently, so a mistyped keyword or an unclosed string is visible at a glance rather than at compile time.
- 4
What is code completion, and state one risk of relying on it?
Model answer
Code completion offers the names of members and methods as the programmer types, which saves time and prevents typing errors; the risk is that a plausible suggestion is accepted without checking what the chosen method actually does.
- 5
What does a debugger let a programmer do that simply reading the code cannot?
Model answer
A debugger halts the running program and shows the real values held by variables at that moment, so the actual path taken through the code can be observed instead of assumed.
- 6
What is a breakpoint?
Model answer
A breakpoint is a marker placed on a line so that execution pauses just before that line runs, letting the programmer inspect the program state at exactly that point.
