Writing functional requirements
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 2
Overview
Functional requirement, atomic requirement and four categories MoSCoW prioritisation uses.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Define a functional requirement.
Give three examples of functional requirements for a stock control solution.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define a functional requirement.
Model answer
A functional requirement states something the solution must do, such as recording a booking or producing a monthly summary.
- 2
Give three examples of functional requirements for a stock control solution.
Model answer
The solution must add a new product, record a delivery into stock, and list every product below its reorder level.
- 3
What makes a functional requirement testable?
Model answer
A testable requirement names an input, an action and an observable result, so a test can show whether the solution does it.
- 4
Why is each functional requirement given a number?
Model answer
A number lets the design, the tests and the evaluation refer to that exact requirement without repeating its wording.
- 5
Why should a functional requirement describe what the solution does and not how?
Model answer
The requirement belongs to the user and states the need, while the design decides the method of meeting it.
- 6
Rewrite "the system should handle orders well" as a proper functional requirement.
Model answer
A usable version reads: the solution must record a customer order and allocate it a unique order number.
Other ways to work this
The same content, four other ways.
What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Defining Requirements and Documenting the Design, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
