Object serialisation and object files
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 2
Overview
Object serialisation, object file and written out when a serialised object refers to another object.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is deserialisation?
What is an object file?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is object serialisation?
Model answer
Object serialisation converts an object in memory, including the values of its fields, into a stream of bytes that can be stored or sent.
- 2
What is deserialisation?
Model answer
Deserialisation rebuilds an object in memory from the bytes that were written out, restoring the field values it held when it was saved.
- 3
What is an object file?
Model answer
An object file is a file holding serialised objects, so a whole object is written and read back in one operation rather than field by field.
- 4
Give two advantages of serialisation over writing each field to a text file.
Model answer
Serialisation saves and restores a whole object in one call, and the structure of nested objects is preserved without any parsing code.
- 5
In Java, what must a class do before its objects can be serialised?
Model answer
The class must implement the Serializable interface, which marks the class as safe to write out even though the interface declares no methods.
- 6
What happens in Java when a program tries to serialise an object whose class is not marked as serialisable?
Model answer
Java throws a NotSerializableException the moment the write is attempted, and nothing usable reaches the file.
Other ways to work this
The same content, four other ways.
What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Multiple Forms and Linking to Files, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
