The network model
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 1
Overview
Network database model, set in the network model and two advantages of the network model over the hierarchical model.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
State two disadvantages of the network model.
What does it mean to say the relational, hierarchical and network models can all hold the same data?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is the network database model?
Model answer
The network model organises records into a graph in which a record may have more than one parent. Records are connected by named sets of pointers, so several owners can point at the same member record.
- 2
How does the network model differ from the hierarchical model?
Model answer
The hierarchical model allows each record exactly one parent; the network model allows many. That single difference lets the network model represent a many-to-many relationship without duplicating data.
- 3
How is a many-to-many relationship handled in the network model?
Model answer
A record can be a member of more than one set at the same time, so a single record for a course can be owned by every student record that takes it, and a single student record can belong to every course set it is enrolled in.
- 4
What is a set in the network model?
Model answer
A set is a named one-to-many association between an owner record type and a member record type. The database is defined as a collection of these sets, and a record type may take part in several of them.
- 5
State two advantages of the network model over the hierarchical model.
Model answer
The network model represents many-to-many relationships directly rather than by duplicating data, and it allows a record to be reached along more than one access path, so more questions can be answered efficiently.
- 6
State two disadvantages of the network model.
Model answer
The structure is complex to design and to understand, and the links are still stored physically, so programs must navigate them and a change to the structure means changing the programs.
