Binary files
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 1
Overview
Binary file, fixed-length record and direct access.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why does a binary file look like nonsense in a text editor?
Why does a large number take less space in a binary file than in a text file?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a binary file?
Model answer
A binary file stores data in the same internal form the program uses in memory, as raw bytes rather than as readable characters.
- 2
Why does a binary file look like nonsense in a text editor?
Model answer
The editor tries to interpret every byte as a character in a text encoding, but the bytes represent numbers and other internal values, so the result is meaningless symbols.
- 3
Why does a large number take less space in a binary file than in a text file?
Model answer
Written as text the value 1000000 needs one byte for each of its seven digits, while stored as a binary integer it occupies four bytes whatever its size.
- 4
Why is reading a binary file faster than reading the same data as text?
Model answer
The bytes are already in the form the program needs, so values can be loaded straight into variables with no conversion from characters.
- 5
Give two disadvantages of binary files.
Model answer
A binary file cannot be inspected or corrected without a program written for it, and the reading program must already know the exact order and size of every value stored.
- 6
What does it mean to say a binary file is not self-describing?
Model answer
Nothing inside the file states what the bytes mean, so a program reading it must apply exactly the layout the writing program used or the values come out as nonsense.
Other ways to work this
The same content, four other ways.
What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Exception Handling and Managing Input and Output, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
