Error trapping in an event driven application
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 2
Overview
Error trapping, difference between a syntax error and a run time error and logic error.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why is error trapping especially important in an application driven by a user interface?
What does it mean to trap an error from an object perspective?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is error trapping?
Model answer
Error trapping is writing code that detects a fault at run time and deals with it, so the application keeps working instead of stopping.
- 2
Why is error trapping especially important in an application driven by a user interface?
Model answer
A user can operate the controls in any order and type anything into a box, so an interface must survive input the programmer never expected.
- 3
What does it mean to trap an error from an object perspective?
Model answer
An object perspective means the fault is raised as an exception object carrying its own type and message, and code catches that object rather than testing a returned code.
- 4
Give three pieces of information an exception object carries.
Model answer
An exception object carries its type, a message describing the fault, and the trail of calls that led to the point of failure.
- 5
What is the difference between a syntax error and a run time error?
Model answer
A syntax error breaks the rules of the language and is refused before the program runs, while a run time error appears only when the code is executed.
- 6
What is a logic error, and why can error trapping not catch it?
Model answer
A logic error is code that runs without complaint but produces the wrong answer, so no exception is raised and only testing against expected results finds it.
