Answer each one before you reveal it.
Is open source software always free of charge? Explain the answer.
What are three advantages of building on an open source platform?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is open source software?
Model answer
Open source software is software distributed with its source code under a licence that permits anyone to read, modify and redistribute that code.
- 2
What is the essential difference between open source and proprietary software?
Model answer
Open source software publishes the source and grants the right to change it, whereas proprietary software is supplied as a binary and the licence forbids reverse engineering or modification.
- 3
Is open source software always free of charge? Explain the answer.
Model answer
Open source software is not necessarily free of charge; the freedom concerns access to and reuse of the source, and suppliers commonly charge for packaged distributions, support contracts or hosted versions.
- 4
What are three advantages of building on an open source platform?
Model answer
An open source platform costs nothing in licence fees, can be inspected and adapted to fit an unusual requirement, and cannot be withdrawn by a single vendor because the code remains available.
- 5
What are three risks of building on an open source platform?
Model answer
An open source project may have no guaranteed support, may be abandoned by its volunteers, and may impose licence conditions that restrict how the finished product can be sold.
- 6
What is a software licence?
Model answer
A software licence is the legal agreement that states what the recipient of the software is permitted to do with it, including copying, modifying and redistributing it.
