Encapsulation and access modifiers
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 1
Overview
Three principles underpinning object oriented programming, visibility of a class member and usual pattern of modifiers used to encapsulate a class.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
How does encapsulation make a program easier to maintain?
State the three principles underpinning object oriented programming.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
State the three principles underpinning object oriented programming.
Model answer
The three principles underpinning object oriented programming are encapsulation, inheritance and polymorphism.
- 2
What is encapsulation?
Model answer
Encapsulation is the bundling of an object's data together with the methods that act on it inside one class, with direct access to the data restricted so that every change goes through a method.
- 3
What is meant by the visibility of a class member?
Model answer
The visibility of a class member is the range of code allowed to use it, and visibility is set by writing public, protected or private in front of the declaration.
- 4
What does the modifier private actually prevent?
Model answer
The private modifier stops any code outside the declaring class from naming that attribute or method, so an attempt to read it or assign to it from another class is rejected when the program is compiled.
- 5
What access does the modifier public give?
Model answer
The public modifier lets code in any class read, assign or call the member without restriction.
- 6
What access does the modifier protected give in Java?
Model answer
The protected modifier lets the class itself, any subclass of it, and any other class in the same package use the member, while unrelated classes elsewhere are shut out.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Objects, Classes and Data Structures, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
