Un-normalised data and repeating groups
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 1
Overview
Un-normalised form and repeating group.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
How do you choose the key for un-normalised data?
What does un-normalised form mean?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What does un-normalised form mean?
Model answer
Un-normalised form is data as it appears on the source document, held in a single structure that contains repeating groups, so one record holds several values of the same attribute.
- 2
What is a repeating group?
Model answer
A repeating group is a set of attributes that occurs more than once within a single record, such as the several product code, description and quantity triples that appear on one order.
- 3
How is un-normalised data written down?
Model answer
The attributes are listed with a chosen key underlined, and the repeating group is shown enclosed in braces or indented beneath the rest, so it is clear which attributes repeat and which occur once per record.
- 4
Write in un-normalised form an order document holding an order number, date, customer number, customer name, and up to five lines each with a product code, description, unit price and quantity.
Model answer
UNF: OrderNo, OrderDate, CustomerNo, CustomerName, and the repeating group {ProductCode, Description, UnitPrice, Quantity}.
- 5
Why can a repeating group not be stored in a relational table?
Model answer
A relational table holds one value at each intersection of a row and a column, so a column cannot hold five product codes. Widening the table to five sets of columns fixes an arbitrary maximum and wastes space on every shorter order.
- 6
What is wrong with allowing a fixed number of repeats as separate columns?
Model answer
A fixed number caps what the system can record, so an order of six lines cannot be entered, and every shorter order leaves empty columns. Searching is also awkward, because a product may appear in any of the five sets of columns.

Every question in Normalisation and Structured Query Language, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
