Documenting and interpreting test results
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 2
Overview
Recording the actual result beside the expected one with evidence, annotating it with the test number, what a failed test must record, and re-running after the change.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why is a screen capture better evidence than a written note of what appeared?
What does it mean to interpret a test result?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is evidence in the context of testing? Give two forms it can take.
Model answer
Evidence is a record proving the test was actually run, and evidence can take the form of a screen capture or a printout of the output.
- 2
Why is a screen capture better evidence than a written note of what appeared?
Model answer
A capture shows exactly what the application produced, including the wording and the state of every control, which a note cannot reproduce.
- 3
What does it mean to interpret a test result?
Model answer
Interpreting a result means judging whether the difference between the expected and the actual output matters, and working out what caused it.
- 4
A test produces the right answer displayed in the wrong place on the form. Has the test passed?
Model answer
The test has failed, because the expected result covers where the output appears as well as its value, and the user reads the wrong field.
- 5
A test expected a rejection message and the entry was accepted. What does that show?
Model answer
The validation for that field is missing or wrong, so the application will store data that the requirements said must be refused.
- 6
Why must a failed test be traced to a cause before it is fixed?
Model answer
Changing code until the symptom disappears can hide the fault elsewhere, so the reason for the failure is found before anything is altered.
