The waterfall model
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 1
Overview
Stages of the waterfall model in order, situation in which waterfall is the right choice and situation in which waterfall would be the wrong choice.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
List the stages of the waterfall model in order.
What has to happen at the end of a waterfall stage before the next stage may start?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
List the stages of the waterfall model in order.
Model answer
The waterfall model runs feasibility, requirements analysis, design, implementation, testing, installation and then maintenance, each one completed before the next begins.
- 2
Why is the waterfall model given that name?
Model answer
The model is named after a waterfall because output flows down from one stage to the next and, in the classic form, does not flow back up.
- 3
What has to happen at the end of a waterfall stage before the next stage may start?
Model answer
At the end of a waterfall stage the deliverable for that stage is reviewed and formally signed off, which fixes it as the agreed input to the stage that follows.
- 4
Give two genuine strengths of the waterfall model.
Model answer
The waterfall model produces a complete set of documentation as a by-product of the work, and its fixed stages make progress easy to measure and a fixed price easy to quote.
- 5
Explain why a requirement discovered during the testing stage is so expensive under waterfall.
Model answer
A requirement discovered during testing is expensive because the requirements document, the design, the code and the test plan were all signed off without it, so every one of them has to be reopened and reworked.
- 6
When does a user first see working software under a strict waterfall approach?
Model answer
Under a strict waterfall approach a user first sees working software at the testing or installation stage, which may be a year or more after the requirements were agreed.
