System testing
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 1
Overview
System testing, performance testing and usability testing.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is usability testing, and how is it measured?
Why is the installation procedure itself tested?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is system testing?
Model answer
System testing takes the fully assembled software and tests it as a whole against the agreed system specification, covering what it does and also how well it does it.
- 2
How does system testing differ from integration testing in what it looks for?
Model answer
Integration testing concentrates on whether the parts communicate correctly, while system testing ignores the internal boundaries and asks whether the assembled product does everything the specification promised.
- 3
Why is system testing carried out in an environment that copies the live one?
Model answer
A copy of the live environment is used because faults in performance, capacity, security and configuration only appear on realistic hardware with realistic data volumes, and the live system itself must not be disturbed.
- 4
What is performance testing?
Model answer
Performance testing measures response times and throughput under a stated workload and compares them with the targets set in the non-functional requirements.
- 5
Distinguish volume testing from stress testing.
Model answer
Volume testing runs the system with the quantity of data it is expected to hold to confirm it still performs, while stress testing deliberately pushes past the expected load to discover where the system breaks and whether it fails safely.
- 6
What is usability testing, and how is it measured?
Model answer
Usability testing observes representative users attempting real tasks, and it is measured by how many complete the task unaided, how long they take and where they make mistakes, rather than by asking whether they liked it.

Every question in Testing Strategies, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
