Building an ER model for a problem
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 1
Overview
Identifying entities and attributes from a description, choosing a key for each, stating the degree and optionality of every relationship, resolving a many-to-many with a link entity, and worked models for a library, a driving school and a cinema.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Produce the ER model for a library that lends copies of books to members.
Produce the ER model for a driving school recording lessons.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What are the steps in producing an ER model from a description of a problem?
Model answer
Identify the things the business keeps records about and make each an entity; list what must be known about each and make those attributes; choose a key for every entity; state the degree and optionality of every association; and resolve every many-to-many relationship with a link entity.
- 2
Produce the ER model for a library that lends copies of books to members.
Model answer
The entities are Book, Copy, Member and Loan. One Book has many Copies; one Copy may be the subject of many Loans over time; one Member may take out many Loans. Loan resolves the many-to-many association between Copy and Member, and carries the date out and the date due.
- 3
Produce the ER model for a driving school recording lessons.
Model answer
The entities are Instructor, Pupil and Lesson. One Instructor gives many Lessons and one Pupil takes many Lessons, so Lesson is the link entity resolving the many-to-many association between them, carrying the date, the time and the vehicle used.
- 4
Produce the ER model for a cinema recording bookings for showings.
Model answer
The entities are Film, Showing, Customer and Booking. One Film has many Showings; one Customer makes many Bookings; one Showing is the subject of many Bookings. Booking is the link entity between Customer and Showing and carries the seats reserved.
- 5
Why is the link entity in these examples usually a real thing in the business?
Model answer
A link entity is normally something the business already recognises and keeps records about — a loan, a lesson, a booking, an enrolment — which is why it has attributes of its own and is not merely a technical device.
- 6
How do you decide whether something is an entity or an attribute?
Model answer
If the business keeps several pieces of information about it, or several other things refer to it, it is an entity. If it is a single value describing something else and nothing else refers to it, it is an attribute.
