Binary files and streams
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 2
Overview
Binary file, difference between an input stream and an output stream and serial or sequential access.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is a binary file?
Why is a whole number stored in fewer bytes in a binary file than in a text file?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a binary file?
Model answer
A binary file stores values in the same form the computer holds them in memory, so the bytes are not readable characters.
- 2
Why is a whole number stored in fewer bytes in a binary file than in a text file?
Model answer
A binary file writes the fixed size of the number itself, while a text file writes one byte for each digit character and grows with the value.
- 3
The whole number 255 is written to a text file as characters and to a binary file as a four byte integer. State how many bytes each uses.
Model answer
The text version uses 3 bytes for the characters 2, 5 and 5, while the binary version uses 4 bytes whatever the value happens to be.
- 4
Why can a binary file not be read sensibly in a text editor?
Model answer
A text editor treats every byte as a character code, so the bytes of a number appear as unrelated symbols and some of them are invisible.
- 5
What is a stream?
Model answer
A stream is a sequence of bytes flowing between a program and a source or destination such as a file, and a stream is read or written in order.
- 6
What is the difference between an input stream and an output stream?
Model answer
An input stream brings bytes into the program from the file, while an output stream sends bytes from the program out to the file.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Multiple Forms and Linking to Files, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
