Object oriented development platforms
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 1
Overview
Object oriented development platform, class library and application programming interface.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Explain why a widely adopted platform tends to be more dependable than a niche one.
What is a class library?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is an object oriented development platform?
Model answer
An object oriented development platform is the whole environment supplied for building object oriented software: a language, its compiler or runtime, its class libraries and the supporting tools.
- 2
What is a class library?
Model answer
A class library is a collection of ready-written, tested classes supplied with a platform for tasks such as text handling, collections, dates, files and user interfaces.
- 3
Why does a class library make development both faster and more reliable?
Model answer
A supplied class has already been written, tested and used by many developers, so reusing it removes the time to write it and the defects a fresh implementation would contain.
- 4
What is an application programming interface?
Model answer
An application programming interface, or API, is the published set of classes, methods and parameters through which one piece of software offers its services to another.
- 5
What is the difference between an API and the implementation behind it?
Model answer
An API states what may be called and what each call returns, while the implementation is the code that does the work; the implementation can be rewritten entirely without breaking any caller as long as the API is unchanged.
- 6
What is a framework, and how does a framework differ from a library?
Model answer
A framework supplies a working skeleton of an application into which a developer plugs code, so the framework calls the developer's classes; with a library the developer's code stays in charge and calls the library.
