Static arrays of simple types
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 1
Overview
Static array and parallel arrays.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
A program holds int[][] g = {{1, 2}, {3, 4}, {5, 6}};. What does System.out.println(g[2][0] + g[0][1]); print?
What does the statement int[] marks = new int[5]; create?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a static array?
Model answer
A static array is a fixed-length block of memory holding a set number of items of one type, each reached by an index, and the length is decided when the array is created and can never change.
- 2
What does the statement int[] marks = new int[5]; create?
Model answer
The statement creates an array of five integers referred to by marks, with valid indices 0 to 4, and every element starts at zero.
- 3
Why must the size of a static array be known at the moment it is created?
Model answer
A static array is given one continuous block of memory when it is created, so the number of elements has to be settled before that block can be reserved.
- 4
A program holds int[] v = {3, 6, 9, 12};. What does System.out.println(v.length); print?
Model answer
The initialiser supplies four values, so the array has four elements and the statement prints 4.
- 5
A program holds int[] v = {3, 6, 9, 12};. What does System.out.println(v.length + v[2]); print?
Model answer
The length is 4 and v[2] is the third element, holding 9, so the sum is 13 and the statement prints 13.
- 6
Why is an array's length written without brackets while a string's length is written with them?
Model answer
An array's length is a field of the array object, so it is written v.length, whereas a string's length is produced by a method call, so it is written s.length().
