Database Concepts and Entity Relationship Modelling
From ER model to a working design
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 1
Overview
Difference between a logical and a physical data model, default value and documented about each table in a physical design.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is the effect of choosing a column too small?
What decisions are taken when a logical model becomes a physical design?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What decisions are taken when a logical model becomes a physical design?
Model answer
The physical design fixes the exact table and column names allowed by the chosen product, the data type and size of every column, the validation rules, the indexes to be created, and the integrity rules applied to each relationship.
- 2
What is the difference between a logical and a physical data model?
Model answer
A logical model states what must be stored and how it is related, in terms the business can check and independently of any product. A physical model states how it will be implemented in a named product, with types, sizes and indexes.
- 3
Why is the data type of every column chosen deliberately?
Model answer
The data type decides what values the column will accept, how much space each takes, and how the values sort and calculate. Storing a date as text admits impossible dates, sorts them alphabetically and makes arithmetic impossible.
- 4
Which validation rules can be attached to a column?
Model answer
A column can require a value to be present, restrict it to a range, require it to match a format, restrict it to a list, or require it to exist in a related table. Placing the rule on the table means every program that writes to it obeys the same rule.
- 5
Why should validation be placed on the table rather than only on a form?
Model answer
A rule on the form applies only when data arrives through that form. A rule on the table applies however the data arrives, including through an import, another application or a direct statement.
- 6
What is a default value, and when is one used?
Model answer
A default value is the value the database enters when none is supplied, such as today's date for an order date or a status of Pending for a new record. A default saves keying and makes the common case consistent.
